I was a guest on “The Sacred Page” podcast before Christmas discussing St Hildegard of Bingen. The podcast was occasioned by a piece I delivered at SBL on St. Hildegard’s interpretation of St. Paul in her Scivias. Due to technical issues it’s just going up now. I love St Hildegard of Bingen, talking about St Hildegard of Bingen, and writing about St Hildegard of Bingen. Now a Doctor of the Church, she has much to teach us, as her day resembles our own in many ways: laxity, heresy (esp. resurgent Gnosticism), neglect of Creation.
One thing I didn’t discuss much in the podcast that I think is especially important is her concern for the freedom of the Church, as she stood up mightily to Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa when he tried to assert himself into papal politics.
